Matext vs ambientCG
ambientCG is a large free CC0 PBR library. Matext is a paid materials factory. Use ambientCG when the free set is enough.
The short version
ambientCG (formerly CC0Textures) is one of the largest free PBR sources: CC0, clearly licensed, used everywhere from student work to production block-in. That is a good thing.
Matext is not a free-texture site. We photograph Organic, author Logic, generate with Torch, and take Studio briefs. If ambientCG already has the concrete, use it.
Side by side
| Aspect | Matext | ambientCG |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A materials factory: photographed Organic surfaces, Logic PBR sets, Torch generation, and Studio custom work — in one Hub. | A large free CC0 PBR texture library (and related assets). |
| Best when | You need owned photography, complete Logic packs, AI, or a custom brief. | You need a free, clearly licensed PBR set and the look is close enough. |
| Rights | Matext license on owned and generated materials. | CC0. Attribution not required. |
| Maps & resolution | Logic ships complete PBR sets at 2K, 4K, and 8K. Organic is raw photographic material (1,500+ published). | Full PBR stacks at common resolutions, free to download. |
| AI / custom | Studio takes a production brief. Atlas covers capture-oriented workflows. Torch varies owned captures. | A commons you download. Not a brief you send. |
When to pick Matext
You need the Hub workflow, Organic provenance, Logic completeness, Torch, or Studio.
When ambientCG is the better fit
The free CC0 set is good enough. Do not pay us to replace a file you can download this afternoon.
