Matext vs Greyscalegorilla
Greyscalegorilla (often typed GreyGozilla) is a Cinema 4D / Redshift toolkit. Matext is a renderer-agnostic PBR factory for architecture, interiors, and CGI.
The short version
Greyscalegorilla (GSG), now under Maxon, is built for Cinema 4D and Redshift: Plus materials, HDRIs, light kits, and training. Matext is built for the material itself — Organic photography, Logic PBR maps, Torch, and Studio — so the same surface can leave Hub for Blender, Unreal, or an offline renderer.
If your look-dev is a GSG light kit in C4D, stay there. If you need the surface to be physically sourced and portable, that is Matext.
Side by side
| Aspect | Matext | Greyscalegorilla |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Renderer-agnostic PBR materials for architecture, interiors, and CGI — library, generation, and custom production. | A Cinema 4D / Redshift-centred toolkit: Plus materials, HDRIs, lights, and training (now under Maxon). |
| Best when | You need physical-source surfaces and complete PBR maps that move between Blender, Unreal, and offline renderers. | You live in Cinema 4D / Redshift and want lighting kits, HDRIs, and look-dev that match that stack. |
| Materials | Logic ships complete PBR sets at 2K, 4K, and 8K. Organic is raw photographic material (1,500+ published). | Styled material packs aimed at motion and product shots in the Maxon ecosystem. |
| HDRI / lighting | Not a lighting-kit product. Matext is the material. | HDRIs and light setups are a core part of Plus. |
| AI / custom | Studio takes a production brief. Atlas covers capture-oriented workflows. Torch varies owned captures. | Packs and tutorials. Not a custom photography studio. |
| Hosts | Hub + Blender plugin (production). Other DCC connectors are beta. | Strongest inside Cinema 4D / Redshift. Not built as a Blender-first PBR factory. |
When to pick Matext
You need complete PBR maps, not a C4D-only look. You care that Organic started as a photograph. You want Torch or Studio. You work in Blender or more than one host.
When Greyscalegorilla is the better fit
Your whole stack is Cinema 4D + Redshift and you want HDRIs, lights, and materials that were made for that look-dev culture. Matext is not a lighting-kit company.
FAQ
Is this the same as GreyGozilla?
Yes — people type it that way. The product is Greyscalegorilla.
Does Matext include HDRIs?
No. We make materials.
Can I use Matext maps in Cinema 4D?
Yes. Logic sets are standard PBR maps. Drop them into Redshift, Standard, or whatever shader you already use.
