Matext vs Adobe Substance 3D
Substance 3D is Adobe’s authoring suite. Matext is a materials factory. You can use both — we do not replace Designer or Painter.
The short version
Adobe Substance 3D (Designer, Painter, Sampler, and the Assets store) is how many artists author and paint materials. Matext is how we produce and deliver them: Organic photography, Logic PBR packs at 2K / 4K / 8K, Torch generation on owned data, and Studio for a brief.
If your day is a Designer graph, stay in Substance. If your day is “I need this surface in the scene, legally, at 4K,” that is Matext.
Side by side
| Aspect | Matext | Adobe Substance 3D |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A materials factory: photographed Organic surfaces, Logic PBR sets, Torch generation, and Studio custom work — in one Hub. | An Adobe authoring suite (Designer, Painter, Sampler) plus the Substance 3D Assets store. |
| Best when | You need production maps in the scene today, variations from owned captures, or a custom material on brief. | You are building or painting a material from scratch in a node graph or on a mesh. |
| Source of truth | Physical photography (Organic), authored PBR packs (Logic), and AI trained on Matext-owned imagery (Torch). | Procedural graphs, baked scans, and Adobe’s asset marketplace. |
| Maps & resolution | Logic ships complete PBR sets at 2K, 4K, and 8K. Organic is raw photographic material (1,500+ published). | Designer/Painter output whatever maps you author. Store assets vary by pack. |
| AI generation | Torch generates variations from a prompt on the Hub model catalog. | Adobe has added generative tools inside Substance; it is not the same owned-data factory. |
| Custom / scan work | Studio takes a production brief. Atlas covers capture-oriented workflows. Torch varies owned captures. | You author it, or you buy a pack. Custom photography is not the product. |
| Where you work | Web Hub, desktop (macOS, Windows, Linux), and plugins (Blender is the production connector; others are beta). | Adobe desktop apps. Assets plug into Painter/Designer and common DCCs. |
| Not a replacement for | Substance Designer — we do not ship a node-based authoring graph. | A photographed material library or a custom capture studio. |
When to pick Matext
You want photographed raw surfaces (Organic) or complete Logic map sets without building them. You want Torch to vary an owned capture. You want Studio to produce something that is not in any store. You want Hub + a Blender connector instead of another Adobe seat.
When to stay in Substance
You are designing a material from parameters, painting a unique asset in Painter, or your pipeline is already Adobe-licensed end to end. Matext does not ship a node graph. We will not pretend otherwise.
FAQ
Is Matext a Substance Designer alternative?
No. Designer authors materials. Matext supplies them.
Can I use both?
Yes. Export or download Matext maps into Painter or any renderer the same way you use any PBR set.
Does Torch replace Substance Sampler?
No. Torch ranks and generates from Matext’s model catalog and owned imagery. Sampler processes your photos inside Adobe.
